statement on niger delta Edo W’ Obokhian- being the title of a courtesy visit paper in honor of Prof. O.G. Oshodin- Vice Chancellor, University of Benin 4th Dec.09.

We bring you greetings from all members and trustees of the Benin National Congress on this auspicious occasion of our historic courtesy visit on you and the office of the Vice Chancellor of this prestigious federal institution. This visit is symbolic for two reasons, 1. It is our first courtesy visit to the holder of the Office of Vice Chancellor of any university in Edo State and 2. It is incumbent on us to solidarise with you on your well deserved appointment since it climaxed our years of struggle for the institutionalization of appointments based on meritocracy and NOT political expediency; which prompted us to organize a peaceful procession on the 7th of September to ward off fifth columnists and their agents from interfering into the laid down procedures of choosing a substantive Vice Chancellor for the University. Also worthy of mention is the fact that our assessment of your credentials proved you as a man who has acquired western education for the benefit of humanity; hence we honored you on the 29th of December 2008 as recipient of the annual Benin National Merit Award at Saidi Centre, Benin City.

As a socio cultural organization, we recognizes your inexhaustible background in culture and academy, above all your respect for the rules of the organization; so we have no fear in our mind that your tenure as VC will usher rapid infrastructural and human capital development of this Ivory Tower. We listened with keen interest to your televised reaction over your appointment; of particular interest to our heart was your pledge to reconcile all stakeholders in the institution with a view to achieving the set goals as a team. We also want to make clear that beyond academic and non academic staffs and students of UNIBEN, there exists other stakeholders whose contributions to the growth of this institution cannot be under estimated; the Benin National Congress is one of such stakeholders because apart from being a formidable player in the comity of the Host-Community, we also have in our folds students and ex-students of this institution.

We are happy that a rumor making the rounds shortly after your appointment was announced that some street urchins were being mobilized against the institution has been proved wrong, because, we know for sure that the Binis will not tolerate any threat to law and Order within and outside of this institution. We enjoin you to set adequate machineries in motion to dialogue with potential ideas that will move this institution forward because we know that a lot needs to be done urgently to make it realized the visions for its founders. On our part, we are pledging for the first time our resolve to cross-pollinate ideas of development and cultural renaissance with this institution because we find in you a man of clear conscience and a huge reservoir of goodwill.

Please feel free to consult with us on issues relating to Sports, Security, Educational programs and technological development as we will oblige your request any day and anytime.

We wish you all the best.

Hon. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo- President.
